Penn also has served as a math coach for six years, working with teachers and students in grades K-8. She has led intensive math intervention programs for students in grades 2 to 8. Penn has facilitated many math professional development sessions over the past 10 years in districts throughout Northern California, including the district where she currently teaches. She has served as a member of Castro Valley Unified School District’s Math Committee which has worked on elevating teaching practices and fostering collaboration between different school sites. She also has been a member of the team during the last two math curriculum adoptions. As a member of the Math Coaching Consortium based in West Contra County Unified School District, Penn worked with math coaches from all over the Bay Area. She also has worked with students outside of the classroom setting, as a school captain and student liaison for SRO (Students Run Oakland), a program that mentored and trained high school students in their efforts to run the LA Marathon while teaching self-discipline, determination and hard work. Penn has a love of learning and teaching math, and her interest lies in helping all students develop that same love and become not just “doers” of math but truly flexible math thinkers.
